Ok..Let’s go back to the year 1990…a young lady by the name Eileen was the lead vocalist of a group called the Girls Club on Active Records. Active a subsidiary of  Select Records was the label home of Kid N’ Play, Chubb Rock and UTFO among others.

Freestyle Music  never had many professionally filmed videos produced but made an exception with the Girls Club and their  1990 hit “I Lost the Love”.  Other singles recorded by the Girls Club were a remake of the Vanity 6 hit “Nasty Girl” and a remake of the timeless classic by France Joli “Heart to break a heart” which was a duet with fellow freestyle singer Noel (Silent Morning).

Although “I Lost the Love” was the song that garnered the radio play in NYC and most major markets, it was “Heart to break the heart” that I and my contemporaries were spinning on heavy rotation. I had the good fortune to make a name for myself at the club of choice from the mid 80’s through the mid 90’s for the New York Metro area,  Foxes in Jersey City, NJ. This is where I called home for many years as both the DJ and GM. Foxes Dance Club provokes many long lasting memories for many people, as evidenced by a “Remembering Foxes” group on Facebook.

My personal special memory involves the promoting of the weekend schedule. We had secured the services of France Joli, a citizen of Canada, and promoted the night extremely heavy on all the major radio stations and of course on flyers and ads in the local music mags as France Joli was the radio darling of the biggest dance station at the time in New York which was Hot 103.  At the very last second (a Friday afternoon) I get a call from France Joli’s manager stating that they were having a problem with her work visa and would not be able to travel to the states. Here we are expecting a minimum of 1000 hard core dance fanatics on a Saturday night and I had only half a day to think of something….quick!

“Well, the Girls Club had created lots of buzz with their version of Heart to break the heart, so lets hire them as the last minute replacement”…the crowd was understandably bent out of shape when I had to go on stage and explain what happened to the headliner they were expecting, but to everyone’s surprise Eileen’s stage presence and charm won over the crowd and soon, with the exception of a few grumbling customers who demanded a refund, she had all of us eating out of her hand.

A few years later after many more gigs, Eileen became my wife and yes we are still together. So in this case I “Found the Love” Enjoy the video and keep checking back for more excerpts from my upcoming book.

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York World’s Fair in 1965. The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades. Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with “Mambo Negro” the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area.

However, you can’t buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

This week’s Tiki Tiki finds Leticia Reyes bothered about an incident involving a member of the media showing his/her disdain for the most recent album by the group RBD by stomping on their CD on air.  Leticia posed the question whether or not this WAS freedom of speech or unnecessary, disrespectful to the artist and a “destruction of the performer’s artistic endeavor”.  I have to side with J.I. Starr, ONLY because it was destruction of a CD and not an actual piece of art… which would and should bring consequences.  It’s different when it’s a flag being stomped on, but me personally, I would have just disposed of said CD.

Should being in the media, and “supposedly” representing a non-biased point of view, been addressed in this case?  Should there have been repercussions for this member of the media?

As much as I despise many  ignorant and prejudiced radio or TV hosts, I hate to admit, but they represent SOMEONE’s point of view no matter how moronic or how much we disagree.  Our Constitution  allows us ALL the right to be asses.

There’s also mention of Luis  Miguel on the cover of People en Espanol and finally, big ups to the “Norhlins” Saints who fought hard and earned their Superbowl win.

I wonder how that member of the media would feel if the group RBD found a way to get one of the “Norhlins” Saints to stomp on his/her microphone and camera?

The House of Izzy E

I don’t know if you saw this years Grammys, but this was a great year for the show. One performance in particular was all I could talk about and I don’t think I’m alone on this. It’s not like PINK hasn’t left me awestruck before with her voice, her grit and her uncompromising…this is who I am attitude, but this 2010 Grammy Performance was something I couldn’t articulate even after having watched and digested it for a bit.

I was still dumbfounded by the fact that not only had she once again lulled me with her vocals, but she literally performed an aerial artist’s repertoire of moves with total ease and unless Pink has taken a learning annex course or read Aerial Artistry for Dummies…what the?@#)!!!
Seeing my girls Ms. Gaga & Beyonce was fantastic, but I can honestly say PINK stole the show. I’ve seen people lowered and raised on stages, flown over and across the audience, giant props and impressive sets, but this was just an incredibly gifted artist who capitalized on her VOICE, the WOW factor on many levels and the right song and the BEST and most original closing of any grammy performance I’ve ever seen previously. The song was melodic and hypnotic while Pink was alluring, dangerous, sensuous and fearless. Personally she had me on the first full spin when her wet hair radiated droplets across the mesmerized onlookers. This was the whole package, Pink is a beautiful woman, with major vocal stylings and an incredible “showman”. My kingdom for a seat at the Grammys.

When you are having one of those days, or as my business partner always used to say…”yo I am having one of those weeks…no I am having one of those lives”  You know, the type of day that you ask yourself  “what am I doing here?” in this little closet they dare call  a cubicle… Well, when that happens please refer to the adjoining photo and you will feel at least a little less claustrophobic.  Then head outdoors and enjoy fresh air, it is so rejuvenating!

I get out a least once every day with Nya Starr my trusty companion, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever or Toller. She absolutely loves the woods and a nice long hike, or running after me on a great mountain bike jaunt. Just a week ago I got back on the saddle after a major injury that kept me off it for a solid 10 weeks.

This is considered a lifetime when you ride aggressively at least three time a week. Well I am finally back and it’s like I never left. The amazing psychological healing power that riding in the woods provides is a true gift of nature. The mind just opens up with ideas, as easy at it settles down for complete contemplation.

My business partner and I are launching a unique product to the marketplace and the ideas that were nurtured in the woods are finally coming to fruition. The product is Voxflair. A product originally designed for internet marketers, but keeps evolving into something even more useful to the masses. It is truly an exciting time in life.

The overwhelming morass that has affected the world economy has actually brought about a more passionate person from within me.
